Frequently Asked Questions:
Will there be costs? Like most clubs and activities at Hardin Valley, there are fees, especially in the fall and Indoor seasons. They are used to help offset the high cost of travel, support staff, and show design. The fee amounts vary depending on which section of the band or indoor group your child will be participating. Fundraising and donations do help offset these fees.
Does band take a lot of time? Yes, band has a large time commitment, especially during marching and indoor season. For instance, your child will have lessons during the school day, occasional after school rehearsals, and day-long practices during the week of Band Camp. And of course, there is time spent attending home and away football games, and attending and working competitions. All this time contributes to keeping Hardin Valley Band at the award-winning program it is famous for. Most events and practices are mandatory.
Are parents required to help? Required to? No. Encouraged to? Yes! Our programs rely on parent volunteers to "keep the wheels turning" behind the scenes. While helping, you will be able to watch your child blossom into an amazing musician and performer. And you'll spend time with some amazing service-minded parents who will become a second family.
Will my child enjoy marching band? Like all activities, it is hard to determine if your child will love marching band. It will start out as an alien experience that will be difficult for most especially during Band Camp. However, when they enter the stadium for the first football game, the pride of a job well done is an amazing, tangible reward for their hard work. And the comradery of friends with a difficult, shared experience most often keeps them returning year after year.
